street food original 635-284

No blog about Thailand would be complete without a little chapter dealing with food, right?

Wherever you are in Thailand, food is always around and if you can’t see it you most likely smell it. Thousands of food stalls offering the most amazing street food variations, often much tastier then restaurants.

And there we are, my favorite topic, street food.I have been to so many restaurants, everywhere in the world, affordable to expensive, fast and slow, but street food in Thailand is my favorite: Fast, healthy, inexpensive.

You can taste the heart and soul of the owner. Because it is the families’ source of income. They want to do it just right. And they do. day in day out. I am talking about food stalls at fixed places, open almost every day till late and run by a whole family.

For every kind of food I have my favorite place to go and I don’t mind if it takes some time to get there:

Here are some of my favorite places in Chiang Mai:

1.Tom Kha Kai ต้มข่าไก่ Chicken Coconut Soup

Tom Kha Kai

Thai coconut soup, literally “chicken galangal soup” is a spicy and sour hot soup with coconut milk. Best places to go for it: Malin Plaza Night Market (opposite Chiang Mai University on Huay Kaew Road) and Dude’s Cafe at Nimmana Haeminda Road (known as Nimman).

2. BBQ Chicken ไก่ บาร์บีคิว

BBQ Chicken

Best place to go: Thanon Chang Khiang, red food stall right behind Ibis Style Hotel. Closed on Mondays.

3. Khao Pad Kai ข้าวผัดไก่ Fried Rice with Chicken

Same road as in 2. Follow the road until you pass the 7-11 on the left hand side. Turn into the ตลาดเทพมงคล market right after you pass 7-11 and it will be be second restaurant on the right. Click here for the location on google maps.

4. Shrimp Wonton Soup ซุป เกี๊ยว กุ้ง

Best Wonton Soup ever you will find here. You will find the food stall between Moon Mueng Road Soi 6 and 7 on Moon Mueng Road. They will be open every evening and places its tables in front of an acupuncture shop.

5. Mee Grob Rad Na Moo หมี่กรอบราดหน้า Crispy Egg Noodles in thick Gravy with Pork

Best place to go: Food Market in the basement of Central Airport Plaza (not the small food court in front of Tops Supermarket but the Lanna Style Food Court, entrance next to Mc Donald’s.

6. Khao Soy ข้าวซอย Egg Noodles With Rich Chicken Curry Sauce

Khao Soy

Best place to go: Same Food Cort as in 5. There two Khoa Soy “restaurants”, I prefer the one all the way in the back of the food court.

7.Milk Shake นมปั่น

milk shake

Brest Milk Shakes ever: Some location as in 3. Instead of passing the 7-11 you need to turn left before 7-11. The milk shake stall is to the right. Please click here for the location on google maps.
